The only thing you should therefore remember is that the chimera configuration files resides in Snow Leopard partition, so, altering /Extra files in yosemite partition will control only yosemite boot attributes. If your Mac is old enough to have shipped with Snow Leopard, then I'd recommend reformatting and doing a fresh install. I don't know about Yosemite, but I've heard Mavericks can be be slow on older Macs if you install it overtop. I did this (Snow Leopard to Mavericks) earlier this year and have zero complaints about speed.

- I'm currently running VMWare Fusion 4.1.4 on a Mac Snow Leopard, in order to retain access to a Windows XP Virtual Machine, which houses a quite ancient (but perfectly adequate) accounting program. It's becoming more and more difficult to stay viable with Snow Leopard, so I'm going to upgrade it to Yosemite.

You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Download macOS
It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you're plugged into AC power and have a reliable internet connection.

Your web browser downloads the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. Install macOS
Follow the onscreen instructions in the installer. It might be easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.
If the installer asks for permission to install a helper tool, enter the administrator name and password that you use to log in to your Mac, then click Add Helper.
